| More Than A Slave - Reviews | More Than a Slave: The Life of Katherine Ferguson by Margaret Pagan is a fictionalized account of the ex-enslaved woman who founded New York's first Sunday School and pioneered work among the abolitionist and Christian communities of her day. Thoroughly researched and passionately written, "More Than a Slave" tells the story of double emancipation--from the sin of slavery and from the slavery of sin. Anyone wanting more insight into the amazing history of African American believers will be delighted and encouraged by Pagan's work. Reviewer: Dr. Robert W. Kellermen, Author, Westminister, Maryland
| Author, Margaret D. Pagan wrote very passionately regarding our ancestors struggles of slavery in the early 1800's. The character of Katherine Ferguson portrays a beautifully spirited, God - fearing slave who walked in the vast knowledge that she was indeed `More Than A Slave.' Pagan wrote Katherine Ferguson's character with well-defined diction. I highly recommend this book for those who may have any doubt that God is definitely in control. This would be a great read for children who love to read as well.
Reviewer: Linda Washington-Johnson, Jackson Mississippi Readers Club | | Thinking reflectively, the phrase, “hope comes dancing” capsulizes my response to this book. I will not forget the heart-stopping scene in which Hannah, Katherine’s mother, relates to the child her intention of “giving her to God.” This scene became the rallying point of the child Katy’s hope and faith during the next turbulent years that followed. She waded through them with grit and grace, continuing her church attendance. Her work ethic and faithfulness led to her release from bondage and she continued to serve God for the balance of her life. As the Bible says in John 8:36: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” Reviewer: Reverend Anne Perry, Ph.D. Founder, Wise Pen Christian Writers Group, Baltimore, Maryland | It is clear that God used Margaret Pagan as a chosen vessel to write a life-changing and heart-moving book that brings alive the history and life of Katherine Ferguson. As I read this book it was as if I were actually present and living through the time periods and events that were unfolded. The book is written in a way that causes the reader to make an emotional connection with the experience of each character and with the deep pain and sorrow that the African slave mothers and fathers experienced when their families were separated, never to be reunited . This book will be a blessing to each person who reads it. In particular, it will be used by God to draw many souls to Jesus Christ. Mrs. Pagan brilliantly explains the covenant relationship between God and Katherine Ferguson that inspired me to consecrate and re-dedicate my life to Christ. Many lives will be spiritually awakened and transformed through the words that God speaks to us through this book. This a book about God's love for and faithfulness to all human beings who put their trust in Him, and yield their life and will to God's will. This is a must read for all who seek to know the ways of God and how He deals with His children. Reviewer: Verna Brinson, President/CEO, Alpha Risk Management Group, Baltimore, Maryland
More Than A Slave: The Life of Katherine Ferguson is an extraordinarily well-written book. The author of the book, Margaret Pagan, is a powerful writer. Her writing style, as well as the content of the book, is riveting and holds the reader in a state of suspense that makes it impossible to put the book down until you have completed reading it. You want to discover what happens in the life of a seven year old child after she is being separated from her. This is a book for the entire family to read. Mrs. Ferguson never met father. Prior to being separated from her mother she was constantly taught that she was more than a slave because she belonged to God. This identity was planted so deeply into her heart and spirit that she was able to live a life of prayer and faith. She memorized scriptures from the Bible that she heard each Sunday as she attended church. A woman of prayer, she yielded her life and her will to God. After having spent time in West Africa and having toured the slave trade castles, I understand how we as a race are so strong. The will and strength of our ancestors are demonstrated so vividly in this book. As you read it, you will appreciate your past, reflect on the present, and thank God for the future. You will understand that God has been a driving force in our deliverance from slavery. More Than A Slave: The Life of Katherine Ferguson will provide much discussion for the entire family. It’s a great book of courage and promise. Reviewer: Mrs. LaVon W. Bracey, New Covenant Baptist Church, Orlando, Florida |
