I wanted to be a writer since childhood but heard the expression “starving writer” too often, so got a job. While working at the Social Security Administration, I satisfied myself by freelancing for local magazines, newspapers, and journals. But the job afforded writing opportunities as well. I submitted articles to the monthly magazine for Social Security employees, Oasis, and joined a lunchtime group called the Wordsmith Creative Writing Group, eventually becoming president. Later, I became the first editor of the national newsletter, Social Security Today.
At some point, I became interested in family history. That research led to several published articles and a passion for African American history.
After listening to a sermon by the late Rev. Joseph "Preacher" Brown, I decided to become a follower of Jesus Christ. I then wanted my writing to reflect my love for Him. The glorious result was my first book More Than A Slave: The Life of Katherine Ferguson, based on the true story of a Christian woman. A sequel entitled The Fulani Girls followed. It’s the story of two girls captured in Africa and separated during slavery who struggle to be together again.
